The city of Long Beach is moving forward with a ban on flavored tobacco and vaping products.

The city council has voted unanimously to outlaw the products, including menthol cigarettes.

Supporters of the move say the flavors, usually sweet like candy, are aimed at children. Among those speaking in favor of the ban, a former Long Beach student who now attends USC.

No one spoke out against the ban during the council meeting, but the National Association of Tobacco Outlets has said such a ban would only hurt more businesses already hammered by the pandemic-induced recession.

There will be a 90-day grace period for retailers before enforcement.

Dozens of cities in California and across the country have imposed similar bans.
