LAS CRUCES - Las Cruces police responded to Calle Bella late Wednesday morning to a report of shots fired.

LCPD spokesperson Dan Trujillo said the incident occurred at about 11:20 a.m. Police arrived at the 4900 block of Calle Bella to find a male victim with a gunshot wound to the leg. He was transported to a local hospital. His injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.

The suspect is not in custody and his whereabouts are currently unknown. He was last seen leaving the scene.

Police had blocked Calle Bella, off of Mesa Grande Drive, earlier but that has since been lifted. Nearby Oñate High School was placed on temporary lockdown. The precautionary lockdown was lifted before 12:30 p.m.

Trujillo said several people have been interviewed by investigators and potential evidence has been collected. The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Las Cruces police at 575-526-0795.

This is a developing story.
