West Virginia’s graduation rate improved in the 2019-20 school year, but some local counties came in below the state average.

High schools in West Virginia graduated an average of 92.07% of four-year students during 2019-20, according to data from West Virginia Department of Education. The rate is up from 91.40% for the 2018-19 school year.

Six counties in the region fell below the state average: Boone at 91.76%, Cabell at 89.99%, Jackson with 91.88%, Kanawha at 87.51%, Roane with 88.46% and Wayne with 84.96%.

Braxton (96.45%), Clay (94.50%), Lincoln (92.42%), Mason (94.29%), Mingo (94.19%), Nicholas (95.65%), Putnam (98.08%) and Calhoun (95.70%) finished above the state average.

In total, 32 West Virginia counties finished with a graduation rate of 92.07% or better. The state average has improved among four year graduates for the past four years.
