Wisconsin reaches 25% fully vaccinated as new COVID-19 cases rise

MADISON (WLUK) -- More than one in four Wisconsinites has been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, while new cases took another jump on Wednesday.

Department of Health Services numbers showed 929 new confirmed infections, or 16% of the 5,805 tests reported. The seven-day average of new cases increased to 823.

Five more people died of COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, with the rolling weekly average of deaths holding at six.


Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been 587,561 confirmed cases and 6,695 deaths. DHS lists 571,7778 people as having recovered from COVID-19.


The daily vaccination update showed 25.2% of the state's residents -- 1,467,815 people -- have completed their vaccination series. A total of 38%, or 2,214,114 people, have received at least one shot. There have been 3,617,906 doses administered in Wisconsin so far.


Hospitalizations saw little change on Wednesday. The Wisconsin Hospital Association reported treating 317 COVID-19 patients, the same number as on Tuesday, and 49 more than a week earlier. Of those, 71 were in intensive care, five fewer than on Tuesday but six more than a week earlier.

Northeast region hospitals reported 32 COVID-19 patients, four more than on Tuesday and 10 more than a week earlier. Four of those were in ICUs, the same number as on Tuesday and one more than a week earlier. In the Fox Valley region, there were 19 COVID-19 patients, no change from Tuesday and down three over a week. Four of those were in ICUs, down three in a day and flat over a week.
