Catalytic Converter Thefts Are Up In Charlotte Metro: CMPD
Catalytic converter thefts are up 172 percent this year, according to Charlotte police. Here's the vehicle they say is most often targeted.
CHARLOTTE, NC — A string of thefts that have left drivers with an expensive repair bill is on the rise in the Charlotte metro, according to police. Thieves are increasingly stealing catalytic converters in order to harvest the high-value precious metals platinum, palladium and rhodium found inside them.
"So far this year, more than 430 catalytic converters have been stolen, an increase of 172%," Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said Wednesday. In Charlotte, there are higher concentrations of the thefts in the Steel Creek and University City areas.
Thieves are choosy as well, and are targeting one vehicle model in particular, police said.

"More than a third of these thefts have involved the Toyota Prius model due to the higher concentration of precious metal," CMPD said.
Due to the challenge in investigating the crimes and linking the devices to their original vehicles after they've been removed, police are asking the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

"Oftentimes, the owners of the vehicles are unaware of the theft until they are driving their vehicle and notice an irregular sound or operation of their vehicle. It can cost hundreds, or even thousands of dollars to repair the damage caused from cutting off a catalytic converter," CMPD said.
CMPD said the public is encouraged to call 911 if they hear strange noises coming from a parked car, or if they see anyone with cutting tools near a parked car.
"Parking in a conspicuous, well-lit area is also an effective deterrent of these crimes," CMPD said.
