The St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office is praising one of their deputies for going above and beyond for a family of ducks on his day off. Deputy Brent Viator was off duty, but he said he had to jump into action Tuesday afternoon when he saw a family of ducks in potential danger. Helping the ducklings cross the busy four-lane Highway 51 in LaPlace became his priority before heading home, according to St. John the Baptist Parish sheriff's office. Deputy Viator used his emergency equipment and stopped the traffic to assist the duck family. The situation got a bit difficult, however, when one of the ducks tripped and fell over, according to the sheriff. The sheriff said the deputy Viator quickly went to the duckling’s aid, picked it up, and delivered it to the rest of its family.The incident ended happily as the entire duck family crossed the highway without any casualties, according to the sheriff's office. Deputy Viator said he was happy to report that the drivers waited patiently for the duck family to cross the road.
