Police say a shooting left a 7-year-old boy dead and his mother in the hospital in Riviera Beach.

The shooting happened just after midnight on Wednesday at an apartment complex on AC Evans Street, which is just off Silver Beach Road.

At 12:07 a.m., officers responded to a report of gunfire at the complex. When officers arrived, relatives had already started giving aid to the boy and took him to the hospital in a personal vehicle. Police provided an escort.

The unidentified boy, shot multiple times, died at the hospital.

His mother, 28-year-old Addiscia Ball, is in good condition.

Police tell CBS12 News reporter Lena Salzbank that the shooter fired around 10 shots through a bedroom window where a family of four slept inside. Photos from the scene show a shattered television, a broken window, and a mattress with a pool of blood on the floor.

Police Chief Nathan Osgood said investigators believe the shooter targeted the apartment, but not the child.
