Martinsville defeats Greenwood in Mid-State contest

GREENWOOD —Both teams were strong on the hill Tuesday, but Martinsville came out on top and defeated Greenwood, 3-2 in the Mid-State meeting. Artesian pitchers allowed just four hits to the Woodmen.

Martinsville got things moving in the first inning, when Riddick Bolton’s sacrifice fly scored one run.

In the bottom of the second inning, Greenwood tied things up at two when Isaac Simpson singled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run.

The Artesians pulled away for good with one run in the third inning when Levi Suter grounded out, scoring one run.

Braxton Wilson took the win for Martinsville on the mound. Wilson allowed four hits and two runs over six innings, striking out eight. Andrew Payton threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Luke Fiesel took the loss for Greenwood. The pitcher surrendered three runs on four hits over three innings, striking out one and walking one.

Will Bastin led Martinsville with two hits in three at bats.
