2013. The Patrick Cudahy meat processing plant just a few blocks directly east of General Mitchell International Airport.

On Tuesday the evening, Cudahy residents began reporting the smell of gas throughout the city.

We Energies is still determining the cause of the issue.

“We are still investigating an issue on our natural gas system that caused natural gas odors in Cudahy, including the Patrick Cudahy plant,” said Amy Jahns, a We Energies spokesperson.

The Patrick Cudahy/Smithfield plant, 1 Sweet Applewood Lane, was reportedly evacuated Tuesday night but as of Wednesday, the plant is back in operation.

Jahns said We Energies has returned the natural gas system to normal operations. Crews were out in the Cudahy area on Wednesday checking equipment as a precaution.

If any residents smell natural gas, they should call 800-261-5325.
