Dani Burge, above, and Austin Meyer, shown competing at the Ogallala meet two weeks ago, both enjoyed a good day of throwing at the Creek Valley meet Monday. Burge won the discus and took third in the shot while Meyer took third in the shot and fifth in the discus.

Girls third, boys fifth at Creek Valley meet

Shane Hite’s Perkins County Lady Plainsmen claimed a third place finish in the Creek Valley twilight meet in Chappell Monday.

The girls finished with 67 points, following Wallace with 77 and South Platte with 93.

The boys finished fifth with 70 points.

Hite said both teams competed well but each team was missing some athletes who would have had an impact on final team scores.

It’s tough to get up for Monday meets, plus the weather wasn’t the greatest, with some wind and cooler temperatures.

Weather continues to play a factor in getting his athletes in shape, he said.

“The weather is not helping us get them in shape—practice weather or meet day weather. We need some hot days,” he noted.

Hopefully conditions will improve for the Plainsmen’s next meet Saturday at Sutherland.

He expects most of the athletes that missed Monday’s meet will be ready for Satruday’s meet, which is scheduled to begin with field events at 12 noon MDT.

For the girls, senior Dani Burge and sophmore Meredith Gloy paced the team at Creek Valley.

Burge won the discus with a personal best throw of 91-9.5. She added a third place finish in the shot put with another personal best of 29-8.

Gloy finished second in the 1,600 and third in the 800 .

Hallie Fisher added a fourth and fifth place finishes in the hurdle events.

Other individual medal winners included Rylee Huff with a second in the triple jump and Hannah Kempf taking third in the 100.

The 4x100 relay team was just 0.7 of a second behind the winner, taking second place. The 4x400 relay finished third.

In boys’ competition, Hunter Garner won the high jump at 5-8 and took fifth and sixth place finishes in the 100 and 200 respectively.

In the shot put, the Plainsmen placed all three throwers, led by Chase Johnson with a second place effort.

Austin Meyer took third with his brother taking fifth, both turning in personal bests.

Colton Pouk added a second place finish in the 1,600.
