One of Sacramento's oldest playgrounds is getting a prehistoric makeover
One of Sacramento's most outdated playgrounds is undergoing a massive makeover, and the big unveiling will happen in a few weeks.
City officials said they hope the updates at Oki Park spark the imagination of a lot of children in the community. The new playground has a dinosaur exploration theme and will feature a flying pterodactyl and T. rex.
Oki Park was built in 1992 after neighbors in the College Greens and Glen Brook community raised money to give children a safe place to play.
Sacramento city officials said the play structure was in bad shape after 30 years. Working together, they were able to get the funds necessary to renovate it. The Oki playground makeover cost the city about $500,000.
Council member Eric Guerra said it's exciting to bring a science-based park to families in Sacramento.
"This new phase gives it bright new energy, a bright new look and gives it a little bit of that science spin to it," Guerra said. "So the fact that we were able to replace it and bring a new dinosaur theme, we are going to see new paleontologists come out of our community because of it. I have already seen so many kids who are excited."
Construction will be completed at the end of April, and the ribbon-cutting will take place May 1.
