Flint Hills burning leads to air quality advisory

Burning in the Flint Hills has led to an air quality advisory for the Wichita area.

Prescribed burns Tuesday and today have sent smoke across south-central Kansas, and people with health issues could feel the effects. The Air Quality Index ranges from Moderate to Unhealthy in Kansas, with the Wichita area being in the Sensitive Groups portion. Air quality issues are most prevalent overnight, and you can check an air quality map by using the following link. AirNow Air Quality Map

Conditions in Wichita are expected to be worse on Thursday, as winds shift and carry more smoke into the city.

Smoke from burning in the Flint Hills can lead to higher ozone levels, which can cause irritation even among health individuals. Burning eyes, runny nose, and coughing are the most common symptoms you could see.

If smoke moves into your area, you’re advised to limit outdoor activity, even if you’re in good health. People with heart or breathing issues are advised to stay inside.
