Meriden police: Homicide suspect says his brother’s deadly shooting was an accident

A man who told police he accidentally fatally shot his brother in Meriden over the weekend has been arrested, police said.

Anthony Smith was charged with manslaughter Tuesday, they said. His bail on the charge was set at $500,000.

According to police, detectives responded Saturday to the MidState Medical Center, where a man had shown up with a gunshot wound. The man, who police learned was Dante Smith, 38, ended up dying.

As detectives investigated, they came to suspect Dante Smith’s brother, Anthony Smith, and took him into custody on unrelated charges, police said.

Investigators interviewed him Tuesday, and Smith was cooperative. Police said he admitted to accidentally shooting his brother with a rifle.

He was charged with manslaughter, they said.
