Coronavirus in Mississippi: 275 new cases, 3 deaths reported Wednesday

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 275 new cases of COVID-19 and three coronavirus-related deaths Wednesday.

Since the virus hit the state in March 2020, a total of 308,111 cases and 7,122 coronavirus-related deaths have been reported. 

According to a New York Times database Wednesday, at least 987 new coronavirus deaths and 77,312 new cases were reported in the U.S. Over the past week, there has been an average of 71,215 cases per day, an increase of 8% from the average two weeks earlier.

The department on Wednesday reported 19 outbreaks at Mississippi nursing homes. There have been 10,439 cases of the coronavirus in long-term care facilities and 1,974 deaths reported as of Wednesday, the latest figures available.

Residents between the ages of 25 and 39 represent the largest portion of the infected population in the state, with 67,951 cases reported Tuesday, the latest figure available. Among patients under 18, children between the ages of 11 and 17 have the highest infection rate, with 23,748 cases identified. The 65 and older age group has the highest total number of deaths with 5,459 reported.

According to health department data, 883,729 people have begun the vaccination process in Mississippi, as of Tuesday morning. Since December, about 635,370 people are fully immunized against COVID-19.

Approximately 297,362 people are presumed recovered from the virus as of Tuesday, the latest figure available, according to the health department's website.

DeSoto County has the highest number of reported cases in the state with 20,852, followed closely by Hinds County with 19,923, Harrison County with 17,530, Rankin County with 13,344 and Jackson County with 13,130.
