Nevada Assembly Votes To Ban Death Penalty

A Democrat-led bill could make Nevada the next state to ban the death penalty.

The bill was approved by the Assembly on a party-line vote Tuesday afternoon. It would spare any inmate currently awaiting execution and change their sentence to life without parole instead.

It’s the closest a death penalty ban has ever gotten to becoming law in the Silver State, which hasn’t carried out an execution since 2006.

The bill still faces a vote in the Democrat-controlled Senate and must be signed into law by Steve Sisolak — also a Democrat — before it can take effect.
