Las Vegas, NV (KXNT) - The Nevada Assembly has voted to abolish the death penalty.

The Assembly voted 26-16 Tuesday to send AB 395 to the Senate.

The retroactive proposal would abolish the death penalty and reduce all current death sentences to life in prison without the chance of parole.

The bill will now go to the state Senate and, if approved, will head to Governor Steve Sisolak for his signature.

Nevada is one of 27 states that still employs capital punishment, but the state has not executed an inmate since 2006.
