CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. (NEWS10) — State Police are currently investigating an accident on the Northway in the Town of Clifton Park. Upon initial investigation, Troopers say a truck towing a trailer with a boom lift struck an overpass at Exit 9.

The accident investigation revealed that the driver of the truck, 56-year-old George Gizzi of Colonie, was traveling in the right most south bound lane of Interstate 87 in the Town of Clifton Park. State Police say the boom lift on the trailer of the truck had raised, exceeding the height limit for the Sitterly Road overpass and struck the bridge. The boom lift then fell off the trailer, coming to rest across all three lanes. Gizzi was issued a ticket as a result of the accident.

The left two south bound lanes of the Northway are now open and the right most south bound lane remains closed at Exit 9. Closures will remain for the duration of the overpass repair.

State Police say there were no injuries as a result of the accident.

According to the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office, repairs to the overpass will take about three weeks, and Exits 9E and 9W will remain closed during the repairs. Currently, crews with the Department of Transportation have installed temporary support structures to reopen two southbound lanes.

Options for a more permanent repair are still being evaluated, and the overpass will remain closed until further notice. The southbound Northway is now open only to passenger vehicles between Exits 10 and 9 with trucks being directed to detour at Exit 10.

To better accommodate local southbound traffic, the timing of traffic lights along State Route 9 have been adjusted for motorists using this alternate route, DOT said.
