A family in Farmington kept a close eye on the hill behind their back yard after a mudslide covered most of their backyard. It happened on Steven Circle at around 2 p.m. Tuesday.

“This family was extremely observant. They thought the ground shook, they paid attention to the sounds. They immediately looked at it and called 911,” said Farmington Fire Chief Guido Smith.

Smith said a secondary water line, possibly an irrigation line, was damaged and that sent water downhill, causing the slide.

Farmington firefighters and city crews diverted the water flow and laid sand bags to protect the basement of the affected home in case more mud flowed downhill.

Smith said no evacuations were necessary. The family in the affected house was advised to stay out of the basement for safety.
