It's not easy for Jazmine Washington to stand with her children and talk about Miles Jackson.

"We were a family. We were trying to grow and be better and violence stopped it," she said. "...I wanted him to be here with his kids."

But more than anything, she wants the community to know he was loved, and that there are some big questions she wants answered. She wanted to share her take on what has happened.

"He definitely believed in God. He loved his kids and me as his kid's mother a lot, and you know he just really was crying out for help. People make mistakes, but I just feel like this wasn't...it wasn't right," she said.

On Monday afternoon, he died after what police describe as an "exchange of gunfire" inside the Mt. Carmel St. Ann's Emergency Room.

Police say he was found passed out in a car, and after learning he had open warrants for domestic violence and a weapons charge, they started the transfer of custody, leading to the deadly shooting.

"It doesn't add up," said Washington.

Washington told ABC 6/FOX 28 they were together seven years.

"He called me his wife," she said.

Taking care of two of her children and three they share along the way.

"He just loved to do everything with us," she said. "We would go everywhere that is what we would try to do take the kids places every weekend."

BCI is investigating. Police aren't saying if Jackson was searched for a gun, for example. They say an extra gun was recovered at the scene.

The mother of his children isn't sure what exactly he was going through that day.

"The day before I got to talking to him and we really, really had a heartfelt talk that just will not leave my mind and I really love Miles so much," she said.

ABC 6/FOX 28 has been asking police for more details about exactly how this played out in the Emergency Room.

Witnesses have said they heard police try to de-escalate things. But, protestors and loved ones of Jackson want answers.

Law enforcement says this is all a part of the ongoing investigation.

A Mt. Carmel spokesperson tells ABC 6/FOX 28: "Security is a fixture within the emergency department, and we have full-time security presence in our ED at all times. For the safety of our patients and staff, we are unable to release the number of security personnel on each campus. Across the system, we have more than 100 security officers."
