Pittsburgh Public Schools said Castaphney was a gifted and talented student in the 10th grade at Allderdice High School.
"Donangelo was known as a polite, quiet kid. His teachers remember him as thoughtful and kind with a big smile and sharp wit," the school district said in a statement. "Donangelo loved the game of basketball. He played recreationally in his neighborhood and for the Westinghouse Bulldogs before transferring to Pittsburgh Allderdice last school year.
"We care a great deal about the health and wellness of our students and staff. Both student and employee assistance providers will be on hand at Pittsburgh Allderdice and Pittsburgh Westinghouse today to provide support for anyone who needs it."
