Police group condemns former DMPD sergeant for insinuating 'extreme racial violence'
A group of Black law enforcement officers condemned statements Tuesday made by a former Des Moines police sergeant.
Greg Wessels resigned Friday amid an internal investigation by the Des Moines Police Department into statements he made during a union meeting.
According to reports from more than a dozen officers in attendance at the union meeting, Wessels made a comment that was "inappropriate and insensitive" in response to discussions of an officer allegedly leaking police information.
The Iowa Chapter of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, or NOBLE, issued a statement that said, in part, “(Wessels’) comments made at a police union meeting were extremely inflammatory and insinuated extreme racial violence against a command staff member of color. NOBLE disagrees fundamentally with any forms of racial threats, slurs, or comments of any kind.”
NOBEL went on to say it asks for a thorough investigation of Wessels to ensure transparency and accountability.
“In today's time of unrest and efforts to bridge relationships at stake, NOBLE strives to ensure that officers and the public can trust their commanders to make ethical decisions,” the group said.
Des Moines police Sgt. Paul Parizek told KCCI Friday that the department’s investigation will continue despite Wessels’ resignation.
Wessels has a history of disciplinary action with the Des Moines Police Department, including two lawsuits claiming he used excessive force.
Both lawsuits were settled by the city of Des Moines.
