An IMPD officer was in a hospital Tuesday night after his car chase ended in a crash on the Near Northside. The driver who refused to pull over got away.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department police officer's patrol car collided with another vehicle not involved in the pursuit at Fall Creek Parkway North Drive and North Meridian Street, according to police.

That vehicle's driver was checked by medics at the crash site but did not go to the hospital. The officer was in serious but stable condition, IMPD Maj. Kerry Buckner said at the wreck scene.

The chase, which started about 7:30 p.m., exceeded 80 mph, Buckner said. The driver being chased threw an assault-style rifle out of the window during the pursuit. Police later recovered the firearm, Buckner said. The driver continued north on Meridian Street after the police officer wrecked.

"We have so reduced the number of pursuits that we get into anymore because they’re just dangerous," Buckner said. "They’re probably one of the most dangerous things we do. But there's still situations where we don’t have a whole lot of choice."
