Leominster mayor looking for ‘rightful owner’ of sword possibly stolen decades ago
The sword could date to the Civil War.
Leominster mayor Dean Mazzarella is looking for the owner of a sword that he believes was stolen from a Fitchburg home over 40 years ago.
The mayor shared photos of the ornate blade on Facebook, asking for help getting it in the right hands. He told WCVB that the sword was sent on behalf of someone who was dying and wanted help finding the original owner.

Mazzarella said the sword may have been stolen between 1976 and 1980, and that the person who nicked it is no longer alive. The mayor said the sword will be shared with the police departments and historical commissions of both Fitchburg and Leominster.
The sword, seemingly antique, has a decorative golden hilt with the letters “US” carved into the guard. Commenters on Facebook quickly noted that the hilt’s pattern matched the 1850 Union Staff and Field Sword, commonly carried by officers in the Civil War era.
It’s unclear if the sword is a genuine artifact or simply a replica.
