HUDSON VALLEY, NY — It may be mid-spring but that doesn't mean it can't snow in the Hudson Valley. In fact, forecasters are prognosticating right now about the possibility of snow on Thursday, mixed in with heavy rain and freezing temps.

"This is a dramatic turn of events in what was a warm start to April," said Alex Marra and Bill Potter of Hudson Valley Weather. "A cold, early spring nor’easter could bring some unwelcome wintry reminders to the region."

It's pretty rare — in fact, there's just one set of circumstances that could bring us snow, Hudson Valley Weather said. "One of the ways to get a snow event in April, is with a closed off upper level low pressure system … and that’s what we’ll have Thursday afternoon into Friday."

The precipitation begins Thursday, mostly rain. Then, it's going to get cold. Temperatures will drop into the low 30s on Thursday night from the 60s on Wednesday.

Remember, this is a week after New York City had temperatures reaching the 70s, around 10-15 degrees above normal for this time of the year, and Buffalo broke heat records with temps hitting 80 degrees.

"New York City will struggle to climb into the lower 50s by Thursday and Friday, about 10 degrees below normal for mid-April as rain arrives," said Jake Sojda, AccuWeather meteorologist. "Back to the west in places like Erie and Buffalo, temperatures will be stuck in the 40s, nearly 40 degrees cooler than the same time the previous week."

As the storm sweeps through the Hudson Valley, rain could mix with wet snow in the valley and even turn to all snow in the Catskills.

However, this storm system is still two days out, and there's a good chance it'll will take that snow upstate and to New England instead, Hudson Valley Weather said.
