SCOTTSDALE, Az. — A former Middleton High School volleyball player and daughter of UW-Madison football icon Al Toon was killed Sunday night when her husband allegedly shot her before turning the gun on himself.

According to a report from CBS 5 in Phoenix, the incident started around 5 p.m. on Sunday when Scottsdale police responded to a home for reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found a woman in front of the home who had been shot. Authorities later identified the woman as 28-year-old Molly E. Lillard. She was taken to a local hospital where she was later pronounced dead, according to the report.

A Middleton School District spokesperson confirmed with News 3 Now that Lillard was Molly Toon.

“We were saddened to hear about the death of Molly Toon. Molly was an incredibly caring and intelligent young woman, in addition to being a fantastic volleyball player, who had a profound impact during her time as a student in our District,” the statement reads. “Our thoughts go to her parents, Al and Jane, along with her three siblings, Nick, Kirby and Sydney.”

According to CBS 5’s report, Scottsdale police later entered the home to find Lillard’s husband, 36-year-old Royce D. Lillard III, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The couple had an 8-month-old baby inside the home at the time of the incident, but the child was not injured.
