Case against Albany landlord accused of kidnapping on hold

Shawn Douglas, 49

GHENT — The court case for an Albany landlord accused of kidnapping two tenants and dropping them off at the Ghent Union Cemetery has been adjourned until May 10.

Shawn Douglas, 49, of Albany, is charged with second-degree kidnapping, a class B felony, according to Albany City Criminal Court, where his case is being tried.

The case was adjourned Monday morning during a virtual conference to May 10, according to the court.

Douglas’s attorney, Raji Zeidan, could not immediately be reached for comment.

Douglas is accused of kidnapping a man and a woman Feb. 21 who lived at a residence owned by Douglas on Grand Terrace in the city of Albany, Albany County District Attorney David Soares said in a statement at the time.

Douglas is accused of assaulting the two while they were sleeping and forcing them into a vehicle where they were restrained and taken to a motel that was believed to be in Colonie. They were then driven to the Ghent cemetery and dumped in the snow, Soares said in February.

One of the pair was able to get free and ran to a home on Route 9, near the Ghent Union Cemetery, where they called for help, Lt. John Rivero of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office said in February.
