If you haven't been outside lately, you're really missing out because it's been absolutely beautiful. The usual springtime pop-up storms have been blowing through (remember the hail we got last week?), but for the most part it's been a gorgeous Spring so far, with green grass galore and beautiful bluebonnets in bloom.

This is the time of year when many of us do our best to get outdoors more and enjoy what little Spring Texas gets before Summer crashes through the wall like the Kool-Aid man, and there's an event coming up that'll give families an opportunity to enjoy the best this season has to offer.

On Saturday, April 24, the City of Harker Heights will host a Spring Fun Day in the Park at Carl Levin Park, 400 Millers Crossing.

From 5PM to 8PM, the park will be abuzz with live music, art, a pop-up activities trailer, art vendors, and more. The event is free, and vendors will have art and other fun things for sale.

Sara Gibbs, Activities Coordinator with the City of Harker Heights, was kind enough to fill me in on a couple of details.

Local artist Stacy Triefenbach will be performing at the Carl Levin Amphitheatre during the Fun Day. While a DJ spinning some of our favorites can be fun, I was so happy to hear that there'd be a live performer at the park. There's something about some live music on a beautiful spring day that really puts a nice bow on the whole thing.

"The Stewart C. Meyer Harker Heights Public Library will be at the event doing programs for kids, such as a story time and craft activities," Gibbs tells me. Live music and storytelling? This just keeps getting better! I would definitely take a blanket or comfy chair with you so you can enjoy both on the grass.

Sara also tells me there'll be an art demonstration, so be sure to take that in. Spring is all about new life and creativity, and you may find the inspiration you've been looking for to start your next creative endeavor.

Finally, I had to ask Sara if the event is pet friendly because I'm always looking for a reason to take my dog along. Sara said it is, but they do ask that pets be on a leash and current on their vaccinations. So yes, you can take Scruffy with you as long as he's safely on a lease and has all his shots.

As for us humans, Sarah says face masks and physical distancing are encouraged wherever possible so everyone can have a safe time.

Thanks to Sara and the good folks at the City of Harker Heights for the heads-up about the Spring Fun Day in the Park. This past year has had us all so cooped up and antsy, so it's nice to see family friendly outdoor events returning to our communities.

If you have any questions or are interested in being a vendor at the event, visit the City of Harker Heights Special Events website or give them a call at (254) 953-5493.
