Readers respond: Living the vaccination nightmare

Letters to the editor

The vaccine signup process in Oregon is extremely bureaucratic. First, the state signup site is not used by for-profit corporations that provide some vaccines in Oregon. I received one email notification for a clinic, but when I tried to sign up, it was full. I tried my county vaccine site. Most listed vaccination clinics were full, and the only open clinic required three health insurance numbers that aren’t listed on my health insurance card. I called my health care provider for the information, but when I returned to the signup site, the clinic was full. Then I tried to sign up for the state fairgrounds mass-vaccination clinic in a neighboring county, but this site required both my health insurance and my Social Security numbers even though these are not supposed to be required. Then the site kept telling me that my information was incorrect no matter how carefully I entered it. Next, I tried a big-box chain grocery store multiple times. Its website directed me to a national site that asked me the same questions about eligibility before telling me there were no available vaccine clinics at the specific store I asked about. I repeated the process many times for multiple stores in the chain only to be told the same thing each time. I remain unvaccinated and traumatized by my experiences.
