Will Oakland schools reopen classrooms for in-person instruction in a matter of weeks?
"I certainly hope so," said Mayor Libby Schaaf. "I have been unequivocal about getting our kids back to school. Families should have a choice and teachers’ health concerns should be accommodated, but that won’t happen until our schools are reopened."
To that end, the mayor wants to get education workers to the front of the COVID-19 vaccination line.
"I organized a letter from 11 of the big city mayors in California, asking the state to prioritize our teachers and our education workers - don’t forget those beloved janitors and cafeteria workers," Schaaf told KCBS Radio. "We need to get everybody vaccinated."
She said Oakland is getting a head-start in vaccinating education workers, because one of the mobile clinics that came with the Coliseum vaccination site is dedicated only to Alameda County education workers.
California pledged to set aside 10 percent of its vaccines for education workers beginning Monday.
"We will never get this year back in the learning for our kids, and I say that not just as a mayor, but also as a mother," Schaaf added.
