Woman, 73, dies climbing stairs during outage at Bronx high-rise

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A 73-year-old woman died as she climbed a stairwell up to her 19th-floor apartment during a power outage in the Bronx on Friday, police said.

A transformer fire at 100 De Kruif Pl. on Friday morning cut power to thousands of residents in multiple buildings at Co-Op City, according to authorities.

The power outage impacted elevator service. As the woman was walking to her apartment on the 19th floor, her oxygen tank depleted and she collapsed, fell and died, police said.

The woman has not been identified.

Work to restore power continued Friday night into Saturday.
