PHOENIX – Permit reservations for popular outdoor spot Fossil Creek in the Coconino National Forest will go on sale next week, officials announced Friday.

Seasonal permits to swimming hole near Camp Verde and Strawberry will be available starting Monday at 8 a.m., the forest service said. Permits are required April through September to hike and park in the area that also crosses into the Tonto National Forest.

Reservations open on the first day of the month for the following month. April bookings begin Monday at 8 a.m. May reservations are available April 1 and so on.

Visitors will need to print out and bring their passes to gain entry and no permits will be sold or printed out on-site.

There are three types of permits: parking; park and 8-mile hike; and horse trailer parking.

The eight creekside parking lots accessible from Camp Verde off state Route 260 to Fossil Creek Road are:

  • Lot 1: Waterfall
  • Lot 2: Irving
  • Lot 3: Tonto Bench
  • Lot 4: Fossil Creek Bridge
  • Lot 5: Homestead
  • Lot 6: Sally May
  • Lot 7: Purple Mountain
  • Lot 8: Mazatzal

Permits for Lot 9, formerly the Fossil Springs Trail, now the Bob Baer Trailhead, are sold separately.

The nonrefundable day passes cost $6 and can obtained at the federal recreation website or by calling 877-444-6777.

Rangers said hikers heading to Fossil Springs Trail have to go through the entrance at Strawberry. They added the hike shouldn’t be used to reach the waterfall area or the creek.

We want to hear from you.
