SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – San Francisco Police are investigating an accident that occurred on 24th Street and San Jose Avenue on Thursday which resulted in the death of a pedestrian.
A 85-year-old man was struck by a 52-year-old man in a Toyota Corolla and sustained life threatening injuries.
The victim was transported to a hospital and later died on Saturday.
The driver of the vehicle, who is not suspected of drug or alcohol impairment, remained on scene and cooperated with police.
This is the first traffic fatality of 2021 according to WalkSF, an organization attempting to reduce accidents and deaths on San Francisco streets.
“We mourn this loss of precious life on our streets,” said Jodie Medeiros, executive director of Walk San Francisco. “These tragedies will continue unless meaningful action is taken. Far too many people are paying the highest price for unsafe streets.”
The city is attempting to reach a goal of zero traffic fatalities by 2024 with their Vision Zero project that improves tries to improve safety on its roads. Despite Vision Zero being adopted in 2014, traffic related deaths still average to about 30 per year in addition to 600 people being severely injured annually.
