Hong Kong Observatory cancels all typhoon signals as Tropical Storm Mulan moves away from city
- City’s weather forecaster called off all signals at 6.20pm
- Outer rain bands will still bring occasional squally showers and seas will remain rough, members of the public advised to remain alert
All typhoon signals were cancelled at 6.20pm on Wednesday as Tropical Storm Mulan moves away from Hong Kong.
But the city’s Observatory noted that the outer rain bands associated with Mulan would still bring occasional squally showers. Seas will remain rough with swells and members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.
Earlier in the morning, the Education Bureau said in an announcement at 5.20am that it would continue suspending classes at kindergartens, schools for children with physical disabilities and schools for children with intellectual disabilities for the day.
The No 3 signal was issued on Tuesday at 11.25am as Tropical Storm Mulan edged closer to the city, meaning winds with mean speeds of 41km/h to 62km/h (26mph to 39mph) are expected, with kindergartens and some special schools suspending classes.
At 6pm on Wednesday, Mulan was estimated to be about 540km west-southwest of Hong Kong and was forecast to move west-northwest at about 18 km/h across the vicinity of Beibu Wan.
“Mulan has already made landfall over Xuwen, Zhanjiang City, Guangdong and is starting to depart from Hong Kong, but there are still strong winds over many places locally,” the Observatory said earlier in the day.
Hong Kong cancels second amber rainstorm warning issued on Friday
Mulan is the second tropical cyclone in a week for Hong Kong after the first was recorded last Wednesday.
