Red Sox outfielder Kyle Schwarber donates pizza to Waltham police, fire departments
Boston Red Sox first baseman and designated hitter Kyle Schwarber is an Ohio native, but for most of Red Sox Nation, he's now just "Kyle from Waltham."
Schwarber wore a Waltham Hawks shirt during his postgame news conference after Game 3 of the American League Championship Series at Fenway Park Monday night and since then, his nickname has taken off.
On Friday, the All-Star, founder of Schwarber’s Neighborhood Heroes and honorary member of the Waltham community, honored the local police and fire departments in town by sending over pizza from Shopper’s Bar & Grille ahead of Friday night's ALCS Game 6.
Schwarber is the son of a decorated police chief and part of a family with a long history of first responders.
Waltham firefighters were grateful for the special delivery, but added their own spin to the story.
"We have paid it forward and sent pizzas to Middletown Firefighters Local 336 in Ohio to their headquarters, station 82, and station 85," Waltham Firefighters tweeted.
Middletown, Ohio is Kyle Schwarber's real hometown.
The moniker "Kyle from Waltham" came from Jared Carrabis of Barstool Sports. Carrabis first used the nickname for Schwarber on his "Section 10" podcast because the player seems like he could be a local from Massachusetts.
"I think the first time I saw it was either (Carrabis) or MLB posted something, and then everyone asked me: 'What's Kyle from Waltham,'" Schwarber said Monday night. "I'm like, 'Uh, what. I'm from Middletown, Ohio.' But I guess my hometown is Waltham now, so go Hawks!"
"Hey Kyle, we’re proud to call you 'Kyle from Waltham!' We’re all behind you. Now, if you could just bring another title home!!," Waltham police wrote on their Facebook page.
