Manchester Unitedleft-back Brandon Williamshas made a decision on his future - and it may come as a surprise to much of the Old Trafford faithful.

After spending much of last campaign struggling for first-team minutes, Williams was expected to go on loan at the half-way point of last term, but a move failed to materialise.

According to the Manchester Evening News,Williams still harbours a desire to leave Old Trafford, albeit temporarily on loan, despite the fact an injury to Alex Telles could offer him an avenue to the first team.

Last summer signing Telles is expected to be out of action until September with an ankle injury, and is currently donning crutches and wearing a protective boot.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaerrecently issued an update on the Brazilian defender, revealing: "Unfortunately, it's worse news on Alex Telles than we hoped for, his ankle injury is a little bit more severe than we hoped and he'll be out for a little spell at least, the whole of August I would think."

Solskjaer went on to play down how much of a crisis Telles' injury is for the Red Devils, singling Williams out as he said: "That is football. We've got kids wanting to play of course. Brandon has done well in the left-back position."

This means Telles is guaranteed to be ruled out of United's opening trio of games against Leeds, Southamptonand Wolves, the perfect time for Williams to come in and cement his place.

Having arrived into the first-team fold in convincing fashion during the 2019/20 campaign, Williams only featured 14 times in all competitions last season, meaning regular football is his priority this coming campaign.

Southampton and Newcastlewere both regularly touted with moves for the 20-year-old and could prove to be two potential clubs Williams is willing to further his development at next season.

There are a number of players above Williams in the pecking order at United, halting his progression, including England star Luke Shaw who is unlikely to be dislodged as the first-choice left-back anytime soon.

Williams can be deployed at right-back when needed, as he provided cover for Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the position last term, though he was forced to wait until May for his first league start.

Given Williams' contract runs until 2024, Manchester Unitedare not in a position where they have to think about losing the defender on a free in the near future.
