Casa Bonita, the iconic Colorado restaurant featured in South Park, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
The enormous Mexican restaurant, which features an arcade, cave and waterfall with cliff divers, among other attractions, filed for Chapter 11 protection in Arizona on April 6, according to local news, citing court documents. The restaurant has been shuttered for some time due to the pandemic. A GoFundMe has been created, which thus far has raised $16,000.
Court documents state the company that owns Casa Bonita, Summit Family Restaurants, has noncontingent liquidated debts below $7.5 million, according to local news. It remains unclear if the location will reopen. The restaurant opened in Lakewood, Colorado, in 1974.
A beloved childhood location for Trey Parker and Matt Stone, Casa Bonita has received several mentions in South Park and was even the focus of a 2003 episode. Casa Bonita was also featured in the 2017 video game South Park: The Fractured but Whole, as part of the downloadable content.
In 2016, Parker told The Hollywood Reporter the duo had considered buying the business in the past.
“Four years ago, it came up for sale and we had 10 minutes of like, ‘We should buy it,’ because they do have a few things up there now where they’re like, this is the South Park Casa Bonita. There are people who go to Casa Bonita because of South Park,” he said then.
Parker and Stone did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
