West Virginia nears 5,000 pandemic deaths as 50 more reported

West Virginia has moved just 55 deaths away from hitting another grim milestone: 5,000 deaths related to coronavirus.

In a news release Thursday, the state Department of Health and Resources reported 50 additional deaths. Twelve of those deaths are new and another 38 are the result of reconciliation of data with official death certificates.

West Virginia’s pandemic death total is at 4,945.

Here are the 12 new deaths:

  • a 55-year-old man from Raleigh County
  • a 51-year-old man from Kanawha County
  • a 73-year-old woman from Lewis County
  • a 90-year-old woman from Raleigh County
  • an 86-year-old man from Cabell County
  • a 65-year-old woman from Raleigh County
  • a 68-year-old man from Berkeley County
  • a 53-year-old woman from Cabell County
  • a 76-year-old woman from Putnam County
  • an 87-year-old woman from Harrison County
  • a 68-year-old woman from Kanawha County
  • a 77-year-old woman from Kanawha County

Following are the 38 deaths that are now counted on the dashboard after the reconciliation of data with death certificates. These deaths range from September through November:

  • a 41-year-old woman from Ritchie County
  • an 81-year-old man from Harrison County
  • a 69-year-old woman from Logan County
  • an 83-year-old man from Cabell County
  • a 70-year-old man from Greenbrier County
  • a 79-year-old man from Mingo County
  • a 61-year-old man from Upshur County
  • a 75-year-old man from Raleigh County
  • a 69-year-old man from Doddridge County
  • a 67-year-old woman from Wyoming County
  • a 102-year-old woman from Wood County
  • a 70-year-old woman from Wyoming County
  • an 80-year-old woman from Kanawha County
  • a 47-year-old man from Wyoming County
  • an 80-year-old man from Marion County
  • a 43-year-old man from Monongalia County
  • a 74-year-old man from Hancock County
  • a 73-year-old man from McDowell County
  • an 80-year-old woman from Logan County
  • a 54-year-old woman from Kanawha County
  • a 75-year-old female from Kanawha County

Meanwhile, active cases have surged again, up 846 from the previous report. The current number of active cases is at 7,113. DHHR officials also reported 1,466 new virus cases since the last update.

Hospitalizations are at 569, with 190 in intensive care and 94 on a ventilator. The numbers had not been updated since Wednesday. Recoveries are at 285,357.

The state’s cumulative positive test rate is at 6.24%, up slightly from 6.23%. West Virginia’s daily positive test rate is at 9.10%, up from 9.11%.

On the county alert map, 22 counties were in red – up four from the previous report. Twenty-five counties, including Kanawha, Putnam and Cabell were in orange. Three counties were in gold, four were in yellow and one was in green. The map was based on Wednesday’s data.
