A family of three were struck by tragedy, and now a 12-year-old boy is left without his parents.

On August 30th, Sean Hammond passed away after a battle with COVID-19.

Friends of Hammond said that he used to teach and coach football in Murray Co., and he was supposed to start coaching again and teaching seventh-grade math at Hammond Creek Middle School this year. Unfortunately, he fell sick with the virus before the football team played their first game.

Heidi Hammond taught first-grade at Chatsworth Elementary. She died on Friday, September 24th, only 25 days after her husband.

The couple's son Marshall is a sixth-grader at Hammond Creek Middle School. He plays for the football team, and his dad would've been one of his coaches this year.

Head Coach George Woods said he personally picked Hammond to be a coach this year.

“I said, I need reliable, experienced guys, and he was one of my top targets," Coach Woods said, "so I talked him into coaching basically.”

The coach also said that Marshall joined his team on the football field on Saturday, just one day after losing his mom.

Misty Silvers, a family friend, said that football was something that brought the Hammond family together.

“The whole family bonded over football," she said. "Marshall was just big into football, and he's a phenomenal football player."

She also said Marshall was his parents number one priority.

“They were completely two of the most dedicated parents to Marshall that I have ever encountered," Silvers said, "Their worlds revolved around him."

Funeral services for Heidi Hammond were held on September 27th, and instead of flowers, friends and family asked for donations to be made to Marshall’s college fund at First National Community Bank in Chatsworth, Ga.

Silvers also shared that Marshall will be living with his grandparents for now.
