COOS COUNTY, Ore. — When a student tests positive for covid, school districts notify parents of those directly involved first and then notify the community of a case.

But those notifications are sometimes delayed and that is concerning parents.

Parents on the south coast are taking matters into their own hands by posting to Facebook to make others aware of cases in their child's school.

While this can be beneficial, it does also concern case investigators with Coos Health and Wellness.

"I do fear that sometimes it creates more concern than there maybe is but at the same time if we are taking extra precautions, we are not opposed to that at all either," said Becky Fairhurst, the CHW Case Investigator. " So, I guess it’s both good and bad but better right now since there is so much covid out there."

There was a recent post regarding a positive covid case in the Coos Bay School District.

The district says they initially handle case notifications internally to immediately notify those possibly exposed.

Then a community-wide notification goes out.

But with how many more cases are happening this school year, they're changing how often they send out community notifications.

"As far as the community in general, we’re going to do a weekly communication that we will post on our Facebook page, post on our website, just saying here’s the number of positive cases in our schools, here’s the number of quarantines we have our schools," said Bryan Trendell, the CBSD Superintendent.

That keeps them from having to send the same letter every day.

With that said Trendell's latest weekly report was on Monday, showing 11 positive cases in the school district.
