SAN ANTONIO - A 17-year-old driver suspected of intoxication ran a red light and slammed into an SUV overnight, killing three people.

It happened around 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of Culebra Road and N loop 1604 Westbound on the far Westside. Police tell us an SUV with four people inside was traveling Eastbound on the access road of Loop 1604 when they were struck by a car going South on Culebra Road.

Two men inside the SUV were pronounced dead at the scene, the driver and the front seat passenger. Firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to free the other two female passengers in the SUV before transporting them to the hospital, one in critical condition and the other in stable condition. One of the women died at the hospital.

The driver of the car that hit the SUV was also taken to the hospital in stable condition. Police say he is being evaluated for intoxication.

According to police, the SUV on the access road had a green light, while the car traveling on Culebra at a high rate of speed ran a red light and hit the SUV. Police say the intersection was closed for several hours while they investigated the crash.

No other details were provided and no other injuries were reported.
